Today, we published the first Public Technical Identifiers (PTI) strategic plan, the last step in fulfilling the implementation plan outlined in the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) stewardship transition by the cross-community working group.

For those who might not be aware, as part of the IANA stewardship transition, PTI was incorporated in August 2016 as an affiliate of ICANN, and, through contracts and subcontracts with ICANN, began performing the IANA functions on behalf of ICANN.
Over the past two years, the PTI Board worked closely with IANA staff, ICANN org, and members of the community to develop an inaugural strategic plan for July 2020 to June 2024. The plan provides an in-depth look at the IANA-related strategic objectives that will help PTI continue to provide secure and accountable management of the Internet’s unique identifier systems.
The requirement for a dedicated strategic plan comes from PTI’s Bylaws. We took this mandate as an opportunity to explore the IANA-related objectives in greater detail, and as an ICANN affiliate, we are of course aligned with the goals and initiatives outlined in ICANN’s Five-Year Strategic Plan and Five-Year Operating Plan.
As the PTI Board Chair, I would particularly like to thank PTI and ICANN org staff, and members of the community for helping us shape the plan, especially during these difficult times.
ICANN President and CEO Göran Marby and I both believe that this inaugural strategic plan will serve as a roadmap for continued operational success and improvement for PTI and the IANA functions it performs. In addition, it will not only provide the community with greater insight into PTI’s stated goals and strategies but will also help highlight the role PTI plays within the overall Internet ecosystem.
The PTI Board has added a vision statement to this strategic plan to further clarify its purpose and highlight the core attributes of the IANA functions team that we seek to harness:
“We are dedicated to a world where the Internet works seamlessly everywhere through our trusted coordination of unique identifiers. We promote trust by delivering dependable services, satisfying our customers, and always finding opportunities for improvement.”
To fulfill PTI’s vision, as well as identify and mitigate organizational weaknesses, five key strategic objectives were developed. These objectives focus on trust, security, service delivery, operational excellence, and governance. The strategic plan outlines the ways in which PTI will achieve each objective, while also providing targeted outcomes and any potential risks and mitigations. PTI’s five strategic objectives are to:
- Maintain stakeholders’ trust that IANA is the proper home for enabling global interoperability through unique identifier coordination.
- Monitor and adapt to security threats and ensure resilient and secure IANA operations.
- Continue to drive the implementation of operational initiatives to enhance the delivery of services based on the needs of the IANA customer.
- Monitor the delivery and performance of the IANA functions to achieve operational excellence.
- Support ICANN org in its governance efforts to sustain and improve openness, inclusivity, accountability, and transparency.
We will continue to engage with our communities, so please let us know if you have additional input for PTI. Our annual operating plan and budgeting cycle is now starting, and I hope you will continue to provide us with useful input regarding these processes as well.
My best wishes that everyone remains safe and healthy during these difficult times.
